Updated on 8 July 2024

You get the drill, whenever you see a box of Wedding Pastries or Xi Bing (喜饼) sent to your home, you know someone in the family is getting married. Now it is your turn to tie the knot and you wonder when do you exactly send them and what options do you have? Let us tell you!

When Do You Buy Wedding Pastries?

Boxes of wedding pastries (喜饼) are gifted from the groom and his family to the bride’s family during the betrothal session (过大礼). The bride’s family will then distribute the wedding pastries to relatives with the formal invitation card. This would be the traditional way to inform everyone about the upcoming nuptials and to invite them to the celebration. Today, extra boxes of pastries will be ordered so that the groom’s family can distribute and share with their relatives too. Talk about gender equality!

Traditional wedding pastries are the “piah-s” that we see coming out of the ovens of a traditional bakery. However, to cater to modern preferences, your favourite western bakery may also be offering its own version of wedding pastries. Below, we list some places where you can order yours:

Traditional Options

603 Tau Sar Piah

603 Tau Sar Piah is a family-owned bakery, offering a taste of heritage with their classic sweet and salty Tau Sar Piahs. Having been around for over 20 years, they have established their signature flaky pastries with other traditional favourites such as the “Volcano” Chicken Char Siew Pau, Chicken Pie, Curry Puff, and Glutinous Rice.

Not the usual cakes you would expect to see in a wedding pastry box, but nobody can resist these classic treats!

The first thing that came to mind when we think about Bengawan Solo would be kuehs!

What started as a small neighbourhood corner store on the east coast of Singapore, has grown to become an established Singaporean brand synonymous with premium quality cakes and confectionery. Bengawan Solo’s signature items include Pandan Chiffon Cake, called Singapore’s National Cake by CNN in 2017, and perhaps the widest range of kueh confectionaries in Singapore including Lapis Sagu, Ondeh Ondeh, Kueh Salat, and Pineapple Tarts.

Order the traditional cakes or opt for vouchers that your family and relatives can use to redeem their favourite kuehs and confectionaries.

Gin Thye

Gin Thye Cake Maker was inaugurated in 1964, with its flagship outlet situated along Sembawang Road. Its extensive menu features western classic cakes such as black forest and miniature cupcakes, popular as takeaway gifts and home party sessions. Founder Mr Lim and his wife, married since 1971, have spent the last four decades in the baking kitchen of Gin Thye, providing many generations with their first taste of baked products.

The name Pulse was founded on the premise of an old musical genre of the 90’s called trip-hop. As the rhythmic throbbing beat pulses behind the background, the whole concept and narrative of the brand started falling into place. The hauntingly dark and private mood of the song had drawn the founders to build the style around it. From how the brand looks, behaves, and even dictates the line of cakes Pulse offers.
