Some weddings feel like they were always meant to unfold the way they did. For Nicole and Taejun, their intimate Singapore lunch at Little Social was supposed to be a straightforward ROM ceremony. Instead, it blossomed into a vibrant, deeply personal celebration that honoured Nicole’s Peranakan roots, introduced Taejun’s family to Singapore’s rich culture, and effortlessly wove together two heritages over heartfelt vows, laughter, and food.

From Seoul to Singapore

Nicole first met Taejun when she moved to Korea. One of her closest friends was studying in the same MBA programme as Taejun at Korea University and made the introduction. What began as a casual connection soon deepened into something that both describe with different shades of magic, her words, “nothing but magical”, his, “funny but sincere.”

Their love story is stitched with small rituals, Sunday pints of Guinness, weekly Korean barbecue nights, walks with their two dogs when the weather permits. It is in these unassuming rhythms that their bond grew. The proposal, too, came with no grand orchestration. One snowy December day in Yeouido, Taejun simply pulled out the ring he had been holding onto and asked. It was spontaneous, quiet, and like much of their story, perfectly them.

A Venue Steeped in Heritage

When it came to choosing a space in Singapore, Nicole wanted something that nodded to her maternal Peranakan roots. Originally considering a traditional Chinese lunch, she was swayed when her best friend suggested Peranakan dining. The idea clicked, it was meaningful, distinctive, and a way to showcase Singapore’s culinary identity to Taejun’s family.

Since Nicole and Taejun were not based in Singapore, their friends kindly helped scout venues. Nothing quite fit until they visited Little Social, a Peranakan private home dining space filled with antiques, heirlooms, and curated décor. The moment their friends stepped in, they knew it was the perfect place. Guests entering the venue were subtly greeted by the sign 如愿, a quiet symbol of fulfilled wishes and blessings awaiting them inside. Nicole recalls, “Danial and Dennes really made everything seamless, from the décor to the food, even lending us a beautiful tea set for our tea ceremony. They made our day unforgettable.”

Photographer Xiuwen of Morii Space, who had been working with the couple for six months leading up to the wedding, adds, “Seeing the guests arrive in traditional Peranakan outfits in this heritage shophouse was a delightful experience. It brought the space to life and made the celebration feel even more authentic.”

The Wedding Day

With just 60 guests, mostly family and a few close friends, the day carried an intimacy that allowed every detail to shine. The air hummed with warmth as relatives from both sides mingled over Peranakan dishes, stories were exchanged across languages, and the clink of soju glasses mingled with the fragrance of spice-laden plates.

The couple began with a traditional tea ceremony, an intentional way to honour Nicole’s heritage while also offering Taejun’s family a glimpse into Singaporean traditions. Taejun shares, “Giving tea to my in-law parents was one of the most emotional moments of the day.”

Xiuwen recalls the challenge of photographing within the delicate space, “The heritage shophouse has many fragile pieces. We had to move carefully while capturing moments, but the result felt intimate and timeless.”

Their vows were spoken softly but carried weight, the kind of words meant not just for the moment but for a lifetime. And in between the solemnity, there was laughter, comfort, and the easy familiarity of two families coming together.

A Subtle Fusion of Two Worlds

The couple’s approach to blending cultures was never about performance. Instead, it was about subtle gestures, Peranakan lunch in honour of Nicole’s family, Korean matrimonial dolls as wedding favours, a quiet pour of soju alongside the tea ceremony. Xiuwen reflects, “Weddings like this show a growing trend of blending modern design with cultural heritage. Every element felt cohesive and intentional.”

Nothing was forced, everything felt like a natural extension of who they are together.

What They Learned

If there is one piece of advice Nicole and Taejun would pass on, it is this: lean on your people. Nicole shares, “Your support system is everything. Don’t be afraid to outsource things to those who care about you.”

Looking back, the couple describes the day as intimate yet layered, simple yet rich with meaning. For them, marriage is about becoming one, choosing to walk the same path together, unconditionally. On that June afternoon in Singapore, surrounded by family, food, heritage, and the friends who had found and shared the perfect venue, the sign 如愿 at the entrance quietly greeted guests as they came and went, a subtle blessing that echoed the good wishes, joy, and support that everyone brought to the day. Every laugh, toast, and heartfelt word carried that sentiment, sealing the start of Nicole and Taejun’s journey together, hand in hand.
